Driving without a tax disc on display?

I have had to declare my car SORN 5 months ago during that time my tax ran out. I have ordered a new tax disc on line. Can I use my car while I'm waiting for the tax disc to arrive? I am wondering what would happen if a traffic warden or copper saw there was old disc on display or none at all, should I put a note on my windsreen?
